Battle Realms, released by Ubisoft in 2001, is a real-time strategy computer game and is the first game created by relatively new Liquid Entertainment.
Battle Realms sports Four unique clans; the noble Dragon Clan, the unpredictable Serpent Clan, the untamed Wolf Clan and the sinister Lotus Clan. It will have 50 controllable units and 18 zen masters (heroes). The single player has two distinct storylines that come under 36 scenarios. Each sides core campaign contains 14 scenarios, but gameplay choices can alter the path you take.
Battle Realms has a unique "Living Resource System." Explained here:
For example, horses are a resource - you can capture them and train mounted soldiers, or let a peasant use the horse as a pack animal so he can carry more rice. Peasants, another resource, train to become warriors, and then train again to become better or different warriors. Water is used not only to train troops and build buildings, but also to put out fires and make crops grow faster. All of these things are the Living Resource System in action, and are a crucial component of Battle Realms’ world experience.
Line of sight and terrain effect combat greatly. Units on higher ground will do more damage than units that are on lower ground. When heading up hills or any inclines units will move slower. Different types of terrain effect line of sigh, letting you use valleys and forests to hide your troops for an ambush against enemy units.
Weather is included in Battle Realms Living World. While rain may help your rice crop grow, it also makes it more difficult to set your enemies buildings on fire.
Units are able to purchase Battle Gear and different Techniques for their use on the battle field. Both of them are explained here:
BattleGear are acquired through a number of different means. The Dragon and Serpent Clans simply purchase them from buildings. However, the Wolf and Lotus Clan have entirely different means all their own. The Lotus Clan summons its BattleGear through a variety of bizarre necromantic rites, while the Wolf Clan’s druidess unit bestows BattleGear upon her children.
Techniques are upgrades that increase a unit’s core stats - health, strength, and stamina for example. You purchase techniques by spending Yin or Yang at training buildings. Unlike BattleGear, which provides an upgrade for an individual unit, Techniques retroactively affect all units of a specific class on the map plus all units of that class. This “stat boost” upgrade makes your units stronger, tougher and more powerful. Since you need Yin and Yang for Techniques, you have to pay your dues on the battlefield to earn these powerful upgrades.
Battle Realms Multiplayer can handle up to Eight players at a time on LAN and over the Internet (Gamespy) and has such types of play as Razing, Kill the Keep, Survival and Famine; all of which include settings which can be customized before the start of the game session.
Peasants are the building block of Battle Realms. They water your crops, harvest them, build your structures but most importantly they also train to become your troops. A peasant can train in up to three different buildings, with many combinations possible.
