If they sold security software by the pound, McAfee Total Protection 2008 would be an incredible bargain, because it has tons of features, many of which are functional and useful. And unlike last year's initial release of MTP, McAfee has found a way to keep the suite from sinking your PC under all that weight. According to McAfee, the current version is optimized to run more efficiently, using fewer processes and resources, and also designed to minimize intrusion on the PC user's "multimedia experience." And, hallelujah! This claim actually seems to be true.
As with most modern suites, the subscription price for MTP allows three installations. With most you'll have to buy another package to add a fourth computer, but McAfee now lets you buy additional licenses for an introductory price of $10/year, pro-rated to match the main subscription. That is, if you have nine months left on your subscription, adding another computer will cost $7.50. I hope this pricing model catches on with the other vendors. Because of McAfee's "versionless security as a service," current installations of McAfee Total Protection will upgrade to 2008 with no effort—the update happens in the background without the user doing a thing.
Organizing the myriad features of this suite within the McAfee SecurityCenter framework was clearly a challenge. McAfee handled it by putting the most common tasks and features in the basic view and pushing the more complex stuff into an advanced view. Most prominent are big buttons to trigger an update, run a scan, and fix any configuration problems. Naturally, the main window also offers easy access to detailed status and configuration options. Because there are so many features, however, finding a specific one can be tough at times.
