Lakers vs. Celtics is a basketball sports game created in 1989 by Electronics Arts. The game includes ten real NBA teams with superstars like Jordan, Thomas, Bird, Ewing and Kareem! You have the ability to play in the playoff tournament and try to win the NBA title or play single games with your friend or versus a computer.
The ten teams include the Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns, Seattle Supersonics, Utah Jazz, Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks and the West and East All-Star teams, all top teams during the 88-89 NBA league. You select your team and then choose single or tournament.
Playing a game is easy to learn because of the brilliant game play. You control the players with the cursor keys, up, down, left and right. To switch player or pass the ball you use the number 5 on the keypad. Finally with ENTER you are able to jump, fake to jump or shoot. You are able to take out tired players and put in fresh ones. The players are detailed and packed with information taken from real life. You are viewing the game from a top-down-view and you are able to view the half court in full screen. There is a rather big board containing the current score, period and time left.
The game has a wonderful 16 colored EGA graphics and it’s all in 2D. The players are nicely animated and indeed well-made, as always with Electronics Arts. As for sound you will hear small beeps a little bit now and then, you shouldn’t except much from a game created in 1989. Overall Lakers vs. Celtics has almost everything you can wish for: multiplayer, NBA license, easy controls, superb graphics and nice sound. If you want something more it might have been more ability to customize your players and the team setup. This is a highly recommended game!
