Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is arguably the best in the series - which is saying a lot -- and while we can't help wishing the PC port could have been shown just a little bit more love, it's the best PC game we've played this year. West Side Story Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas takes the series back to the early 90's, set in the fictional California-ish state of (what else?) San Andreas. You play Carl CJ Johnson, who's just spent five years on the east coast and has returned home after the death of his mother. Upon arriving, CJ is picked up by some crooked cops, and it's not long before CJ finds himself back in the middle of the gang wars. Stretching across three main cities, the world of San Andreas is positively massive, even more so than GTA III and Vice City, filled with cars to jack and people to interact with. The first city is Los Santos, which is your 'hood … and every stereotype of Los Angeles life and west coast rap rolled into a videogame, from your homies on Grove Street to the ritzy Mulholland hills. Inevitably, CJ is forced to explore new locations, and the plot moves beyond mere gang wars and spirals into a more unique and goofy crime saga. CJ soon sets up shop in San Fierro, a thinly veiled caricature of San Francisco, complete with hilly streets, rainbow flags and its own version of the Golden Gate Bridge. Beyond that lays the Vegas-inspired city of Las Venturas, with casinos like the Starfish, Caligula's Palace and (my favorite) Pirates in Men's Pants. Like the other GTA games, you can take on missions that propel the story forward, or you can just explore and see what kind of trouble you can get into. Almost all the missions boil down to some combination of driving, shooting and/or collecting, but even after the nearly hundred (!) missions that make up the core story, they stay unique and interesting. Maybe it's a simple drive-by, or a bank robbery, or an assassination mission. Maybe you need to snipe ten gang members on a rooftop, kill their leader, and chase the final gang member down by boat. Or maybe you need to steal a motorcycle, chase down a helicopter along the freeway, and shoot it down with a missile launcher while being chased by an entire police department. The missions only get more over-the-top as you go, and yet the difficulty stays pretty manageable throughout. What makes the GTA formula so special, however -- and is ever-present in San Andreas -- is freedom to experiment and come up with creative ways to beat missions. In one scenario, you need to chase down a pimp named Jizzy-B (played by Charlie Murphy), but he's got a pretty tough pimpmobile. Easy solution: before flushing him out of his nightclub, shoot the tires out on his car. What could have been a long chase scene becomes a getaway instantly foiled. You'll often need to do a mission once or twice to figure all this out, but it rarely feels like a chore, and these a-ha! moments only make it all the more rewarding. Noua generaţie de astfel de pelicule a purtat clar amprenta lui John Woo, regizor ce a adus câteva noutăţi genului (fără a-l revoluţiona), produsele sale fiind mereu cel puţin distractive. Din colaborarea acestuia cu Midway a rezultat o oglindire a filmelor sale în ograda jocurilor, dar cu un plus evident de interactivitate, pentru a permite jucătorilor să devină starurile acţiunii. Stranglehold poate fi considerat urmaşul spiritual pentru Hard Boiled, film lansat în 1992, cu Chow Yun-Fat în rolul inspectorului Tequila, un poliţist neînfricat care foloseşte metode neortodoxe pentru a lupta cu crima organizată. Povestea este una clasică: iubita poliţistului este fiica unui mafiot, dar ei au o iubire neprihănită. La un moment dat iubita dispare şi mafiotul transmite un mesaj în limbaj Morse folosindu-se de coastele poliţistului ca mediu de comunicare, dar după 18 ani aleasa poliţistului reapare, alături de copilul celor doi. Desigur, pentru a avea parte de un motiv de a ne pune pe omorât mafioţi, iubita şi copilul sunt răpiţi de o grupare rivală şi astfel intrăm într-un cerc în care inspectorul Tequila ba omoară nelegiuiţi dintr-o grupare, ba negociază cu cealaltă, ba are nelipsitele flash-back-uri care completează povestea. Trebuie aruncat în foc şi colegul de la secţie care acum este sub acoperire şi despre care nu ştii sigur dacă a trecut de partea cealaltă a legii, precum şi şeful care te ameninţă cu excluderea din poliţie, lucru care nu face decât să te îndârjească şi mai mult. Aşadar, avem de-a face cu un scenariu absolut banal, care nu reprezintă decât pasul de pornire către adevăratul motiv pentru care merită jucat Stranglehold: acţiunea. Odată cu primele trailere din joc s-a putut observa folosirea bullet-time-ului, deci a fost repede catalogat drept o clonă de Max Payne, lucru parţial adevărat. Totuşi, s-a recurs la îmbunătăţirea sistemului, astfel că acesta este activat automat în momentul în care execuţi una dintre multiplele scheme sau sărituri posibile şi în cătarea armei se află un inamic. Se poate activa această încetinire a timpului şi manual prin apăsarea butonului dreapta al rozătorului, dar în general acest lucru nu este necesar pentru că jocul gestionează bine şi de unul singur acest sistem. Pe lângă Tequila-time (nume dat de producători bullet-time-ului) există şi patru „Tequila bombs”, sau abilităţi speciale. Toate se bazează pe acelaşi „combustibil”, astfel că dacă omori inamici într-un mod mai stilat sau printr-o combinaţie mai complexă, ai mai multe posibilităţi de folosire a abilităţilor. Prima dintre ele este foarte folositoare şi permite însănătoşirea personajului. Cea de-a doua oferă posibilitatea de a te concentra pe un singur adversar si îi poţi pune un glonţ între ochi, camera urmărind traiectoria proiectilului până la adversar, iar ceea ce urmează este o animaţie personalizată în funcţie de locul ales pentru impact. A treia este una dintre cele mai folositoare, numită Barrage, ce permite ca „la supărare” inspectorul Tequila să devină imun la gloanţele inamicilor pentru o perioadă scurtă de timp şi să doboare tot ce-i stă în cale, o metodă foarte bună de a te debarasa de o cameră plină de băieţi cărora le-a plăcut mai mult Beretta decât Shakespeare. A patra şi cea mai spectaculoasă abilitate face ca inspectorul nostru să se învârtă ca un titirez şi sa tragă în toate direcţiile, în timp ce porumbei albi zboară în jurul bravului poliţist, astel că poţi scăpa de hoarde întregi de mârşavi fără să apeşi pe trăgaci, Tequila descurcându-se singur în acest caz. The beginning of the movie sets an awesome foundation for the rest of the film to work with, without making the rest of the movie predictable and pointless. Although the basic story of boy gets girl, boy loses girl may not be original, the way the plot is presented with the excellent magical imagery keeps one interested in Edward Norton's character. My only complaint would be that the movie needs a little editing towards the end as the creators seem to show basically the same scene over and over in an attempt to drive home Norton's character's emotional distress. Unfortunately, this gets a little monotonous for viewers. Still, Norton, Sewell, Giamatti (and surprisingly Biel) provide excellent performances that, along with the beautiful cinematography, make a great movie.
